4 Top Plastic Surgery Procedures

Which plastic surgery procedures are the most popular in the United States—and what do you need to know about them? If you're considering surgery, take a look at the top picks from the American Society of Plastic Surgeon's (ASPS) data.

Nose Reshaping

According to the ASPS, in 2020 this procedure ranked as number one. With 352,555 procedures in a single year, it's clear that nose reshaping is a popular option. While women had more of these procedures than men (287,434 versus 65,121), rhinoplasty is an option for all healthy adults who want to change the shape, size, width, or profile of their nose. This surgical procedure can also treat an enlarged or bulbous nasal tip, a drooping nasal tip, nasal asymmetry, or large/wide nostrils.

Eyelid Surgery

The second most popular pick follows rhinoplasty, with 325,112 procedures in 2020. The patient profile for eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty, includes 279,306 women and 45,806 (in the 2020 surgical year). This type of surgery treats loose or sagging skin on the upper or lower eyelids and can reduce puffiness caused by fatty deposits. It can also help to treat severe bags, correct drooping lower lids, and remove excess skin/fine lines.

Facelift Surgery

With 234,374 surgeries (216,350 females and 18,024 males), facelifts are the third most popular cosmetic surgical procedure. Medically known as a rhytidectomy, this type of treatment can correct sagging skin, smooth folds and lines between the nose and corner of the mouth, reduce the appearance of jowls, and remove loose turkey neck or double chin skin.

Even though some minimally invasive procedures (such as Botox or dermal fillers) can reduce the appearances of some types of facial wrinkles and give you a more youthful appearance, these options won't have the same dramatic effect as a facelift.

Most minimally invasive procedures are temporary and will require repeat treatments. Unlike these options, the results of a facelift can last for years or even for a lifetime. If you're not sure whether to choose a facelift or a minimally invasive treatment, talk to a plastic surgeon about the benefits and the expected results.

Liposuction Surgery

Facial procedures aren't the only top treatments. In 2020 plastic surgeons performed 211,067 liposuction procedures (188,252 females and 22,815 males). This body treatment can reshape problem areas that don't respond to dietary changes or exercise. Liposuction can remove fatty deposits from the abdomen, hips, thighs, waist, buttocks, knees, upper arms, and ankles.
